Almeda Selden (maiden name: Wheeler) was born on April 25, 1822, in Allegany County, New York, to John Whittier Wheeler. She married Methodist clergyman Joseph Selden on February 26, 1843, in Allegany County, and they had at least eight children: Willard, born around 1843; Oscar, born around 1845; Mary, born around 1847; Eliza, born around 1849; Angela, born around 1852; Wealthy, born around 1854; Eveline, born around 1857; and another son, born around 1860. The family lived in Independence, New York. Her husband enlisted in the Union army and died of disease on January 16, 1863. Almeda remained in Allegany County after his death, and by 1870, she owned $1,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property. She died in Allegany County on October 13, 1874.
