Ira Delos Colburn was born on June 22, 1874, in Indiana to Delos Colburn and Sarah Fry. His father was a farmer. The family moved to Colfax, Missouri, in the 1870s, and he married Lottie Martin around 1898. They had at least two children: Helen, born around 1898; and Evelyn, born around 1906. They lived in Topeka, Kansas, and he earned a living as a clerk and salesman. They moved to Emporia, Kansas, in the early 1900s, and by 1920, they were living in Manhattan, Kansas. By 1930, he owned a house valued at $8,000. His wife died on September 18, 1940, and he died in Lincoln, Nebraska, on July 5, 1943, “after an illness of about four years.”
