Joseph D. Nichols
Joseph D. Nichols was born around 1802 in Berkley, Massachusetts, to Joseph Nichols. He married Parthenia Chace on May 24, 1827, and their son Joseph was born around 1828. In 1838, he served as secretary of the Bristol County Anti-Slavery Society. The family lived in Taunton, Massachusetts, and he worked as a physician. By 1860, he owned $500 of personal property. A local writer described him as a “skillful practitioner, and a worthy, genial and estimable citizen.” In 1868, he began working at the “state almshouse and insane hospital” in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He died of anemia in Taunton on May 26, 1879.
