James Turner was born around 1814 in Ohio to Adam and Silence Turner. He married Millie Bybee in Ross County, Ohio, on October 6, 1836, and they had at least eleven children: Catherine, born around 1837; William, born around 1838; John, born around 1840; Joseph, born around 1844; Rebecca, born around 1845; Silence, born around 1847; Nathan, born around 1849; George, born around 1852; Martha, born around 1854; Allen, born around 1857; and James, born around 1859. They lived in Marshall County, Indiana, and Turner worked as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $5,000 of real estate; a decade later, their wealth had grown to $11,200 of real estate and $1,340 of personal property. He died in Indiana on November 28, 1887.
