Washington Bybee was born around 1810 in Virginia to John and Catherine Bybee. He eventually moved to Ohio, and he married Mary Shobe there on March 2, 1834. They had at least six children: Jacob, born around 1835; Allen, born around 1837; Levi, born around 1839; Mary, born around 1844; Lucinda, born around 1847; and Ruda, born around 1858.
They moved to Franklin, Indiana, in the early 1840s, and Bybee worked as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $2,000 of real estate, and a decade later, they owned $10,000 of real estate and $3,120 of personal property. He became a well-respected member of the community. According to one local writer, he was “a man of considerable wealth and influence,” and he was “known and respected by nearly everybody in Kosciusko [County].” In the early 1880s, he served as a director for the Detroit, Indiana & St. Louis Railway Company and a commissioner of Kosciusko County. He died of Bright’s disease near Mentone, Indiana, on February 8, 1884.
