Lucinda Bybee was born on October 16, 1846, in Indiana to Washington Bybee and Mary Shobe. Her father was a farmer who owned $10,000 of real estate and $3,120 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Franklin, Indiana. She married John R. Black in Kosciusko County, Indiana, on September 21, 1864, and they had eight children, including: Allen, born around 1868; Joseph, born around 1872; Mina, born around 1875; Ready, born around 1877; Charles, born around 1881; Nellie, born around 1885; and Daisy, born around 1887.
They lived in Franklin, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $8,400 of real estate and $1,600 of personal property. They moved to Sevastopol, Indiana, in the 1870s before settling in Harrison, Indiana, in the early 1900s. Her husband died around 1918. By 1930, she was living alone in Mentone, Indiana, and she owned a house valued at $3,500. She died of cerebral apoplexy in Mentone on May 10, 1933.
