Martin H. Pratt was born on May 28, 1829, in Pennsylvania, to John Pratt and Lydia Luther. His father died around 1831. By 1850, he was working as a laborer in Washington, Pennsylvania. He married Hettie Reeder around 1851, and they had at least seven children: Estella, born around 1853; Mary, born around 1857; Florence, born around 1861; Grace, born around 1865; Isaac, born around 1868 Emma, born around 1873; and Martha, born around 1876. They lived in Washington, and Pratt worked as a farmer. By 1860, he owned $2,640 of real estate and $629 of personal property. A decade later, he owned $8,000 of real estate and $1,500 of personal property. His wife died in the late 1800s, and he passed away in Washington on November 10, 1907.
