James F. Forder was born around 1839 in England to William and Maria Forder. His father was a farmer who owned $7,500 of real estate and $600 of personal property by 1860. The family immigrated to America around 1839 and settled in Washington, Indiana. Forder grew up and attended school there. He married Sarah Marshall on April 21, 1859, and their daughter Clara was born around 1860. Forder worked as a farmer in Washington, and by 1860, he owned $150 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Union army on September 18, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 38th Indiana Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He mustered out on July 15, 1865.
He settled in Chenoa, Illinois, after the war and earned a living as a plasterer. He was naturalized on October 31, 1866. By 1870, he owned $200 of real estate and $250 of personal property. A decade later, he was working as a stone mason. His wife died of dropsy on May 9, 1883. By 1900, he was living in his daughter Clara’s household in Bloomington, Illinois. A decade later, he was living with Clara in Normal, Illinois. He died in Normal on July 17, 1910.
