Dorothy E. Smith was born around 1850 in Indiana to Nathan Smith and Clarissa Watkins. Her father was a farmer who owned $1,500 of real estate and $500 of personal property by 1860. She grew up in Franklin, Indiana, and she married Henry Curnutt there on May 21, 1867. They had at least two children: Franklin, born around 1869; and Elizabeth, born around 1875. By 1870, they were living in Cerro Gordo, Illinois, and her husband was working as a farmer. She died on June 10, 1875.
