Mary M. Cox (maiden name: Sanders) was born around 1826 in Indiana to Jacob and Phebe Sanders. She married Ephraim Cox on August 19, 1846, and they had at least six children: Phoebe, born around 1848; Amy, born around 1849; Sarah, born around 1852; Thomas, born around 1854; Miranda, born around 1856; and Mary, born around 1859. They lived in Baker, Indiana, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $150 of real estate. Her husband died in the 1850s. She raised her children on her own, and by 1860, she owned $400 of real estate and $200 of personal property. She remained devoted to the Union during the Civil War, writing in January 1865 that “the man that serves his Country for the term of three years is worthy of all the kindness that an affectionate wife and obedient child can bestow upon them.” She died sometime after 1865.
