Thomas Hayes was born around 1806 in Ireland. He eventually immigrated to the United States and settled in Indiana. He married Mary Gadd on August 30, 1832, and they had at least seven children: John, born on August 15, 1835; Sarah, born around 1837; James, born around 1839; Matilda, born around 1841; William, born around 1844; Maria, born around 1849; and Margaret, born around 1853. They moved to Columbus City, Iowa, by the 1840s, and Hayes earned a living as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $240 of real estate. They moved to Linn County, Missouri, in the 1850s, and by 1860, he owned $2,880 of real estate and $1,015 of personal property. A decade later, their wealth had grown to $4,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. Hayes died sometime before June 1880.
