Mary Hayes
Mary Hayes (maiden name: Gadd) was born on October 14, 1809, in Virginia. She eventually moved to Indiana, and she married Thomas Hayes on August 30, 1832. They had at least seven children: John, born on August 15, 1835; Sarah, born around 1837; James, born around 1839; Matilda, born around 1841; William, born around 1844; Maria, born around 1849; and Margaret, born around 1853. They moved to Columbus City, Iowa, by the 1840s, and her husband earned a living as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $240 of real estate. They moved to Linn County, Missouri, in the 1850s, and by 1860, they owned $2,880 of real estate and $1,015 of personal property. A decade later, their wealth had grown to $4,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. Her husband died sometime before June 1880, and she passed away on October 13, 1895.
