John Thomas Hayes
John Thomas Hayes was born on August 15, 1835, in Shelby County, Indiana, to Thomas Hayes and Mary Gadd. His father was an Irish immigrant who earned a living as a farmer. The family lived in Columbus City, Iowa, until the 1850s, when they moved to Linn County, Missouri. He married Elizabeth Cassity on October 7, 1858, and they had at least five children: Thomas, born around 1862; James, born around 1865; Anna, born around 1868; George, born around 1870; and Mary, born around 1875.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on October 18, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 23rd Missouri Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh and the Atlanta campaign. He was promoted to corporal in May 1863 and then to sergeant in July 1864. He mustered out on December 29, 1864.
 
He settled in Jackson, Missouri, after the war and resumed his work as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $3,000 of real estate and $900 of personal property. He remained in Jackson for the rest of his life, and he died there of arteriosclerosis on May 31, 1919.
