Richard J. Britton was probably born around 1834 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, to John and Sarah Britton. His father died sometime before 1850, and his mother owned $240 of real estate in 1850. By 1860, Britton was probably working as a mechanic in Chesterfield County. He enlisted in the Confederate army at Craney Island on July 26, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 9th Virginia Infantry. Union forces captured him on July 3, 1863, during the Battle of Gettysburg, and he spent the next few weeks at Fort Delaware. He died of disease there on July 23, 1863.
