William C. Britton was born around 1845 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, to John and Sarah Britton. His father died sometime before 1850, and his mother owned $250 of real estate in 1850. He enlisted in the Confederate army on April 23, 1864, and mustered in as a private in the Warrenton Light Artillery later that day. He took part in the defense of Petersburg, Virginia, and he was paroled as part of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. He swore an Amnesty Oath in Richmond, Virginia, on May 23, 1865.
Britton returned to Chesterfield County after the war and worked as a farmer. He married Mary Page Graves there on April 13, 1874, and they had at least three children together: Rosa, born around 1875; Ella, born around 1877, and Richard, born around 1880. Britton died in Chesterfield County on July 31, 1886.
