Description
According to the Green Book the Beacon Motel was found on the Smithtown Bypass & Jericho Turnpike passing through Nesconset in Suffolk County, NY. The only evidence of the building's appearance is a postcard. According to the postcard the motel was a white two-story building with a light color hipped roof that ran the full-length. The roof had two motel signs in white lettering on a red background placed on the east and west corners of the roof towards the turnpike to get the attention of potential customers. On the east wall a Beacon Motel banner was hung over the office entrance. The office entrance had stone veneer on the first floor below the banner. The second floor was sided in clapboard. A geometric railing and two sets of stairs served the second floor.
Detailed History
Introduced in the Green Book in 1963, advertisements for the Beacon Motel go back to earlier years with well-received reviews from visitors. A popular drive-in restaurant Shangri-La paired with the motel and advertisements would share how the two were in walking distance of each other. Sadly, those two buildings are gone with their locations unknown along the stretch of road they were once on.
