Description
The 1920 and 1950 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, the closest years to the 1939 listing date of the Capitol Tavern, indicate that a frame building stood at 600 Effingham, at the southwest corner of Effingham and King. The 1920 map shows a one-story auto sale store here. It has a noncombustible roof, a wood floor, three pyrene fire extinguishers, electric lights, and stove heat. The 1950 map shows a 1 and 1/2 story store with a noncombustible roof here. The north elevation along King is cinder block. It is unclear if either or both of these buildings is the same as that listed in 1939 as the Capitol Tavern. On the 1950 map, the Capitol Theatre stood on King Street immediately behind the west elevation of the store.
