Description

Eden Rock Motel is located on 5th Ave, just off Veteran Memorial Hwy in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County, NY. The motel consists of three buildings. The two on the north end of the site are two story. The one on the south end is one story and contains an office section that is taller than the portion devoted to rooms. The office portion features a 21st-century façade with large windows and a stucco finish. Before the renovations the previous design would have been hard to miss with its low-pitch gable roof, the motel's name in the middle of a brick wall facing south towards the highway, and walls of widows to either side of the brick section. Today, the adjoining one-story portion maintains the motel's motor court feel with brick, room doors opening to a covered walkway, and large windows. The two-story buildings were built in distinct building campaigns. The north building close to 5th Avenue has exterior walkways at both floor levels; the second-floor walkways have been enclosed. All three buildings have cement slab foundations with brick walls, and gable roofs with asphalt shingles.

Detailed History

The first time the motel appeared in the Green Book was in 1963. Just three years earlier, the Eden Rock Motel had petitioned for a zoning change from industrial to business for a property that included what had formerly been "Farm Lots in Lakeland, L.I." After that, the motel had its share of being in the local newspapers, not always for good reason – there was a car accident out front, and the motel was the setting for theft. Local newspaper ads for the motel in the 1970s advertised its modern amenities including air conditioning, TVs, and phones. The ads promoted how close the motel was to activities including beaches, pools, golfing, and ice skating. In 1983, the motel applied to expand its facilities. Today the motel is a Rodeway Inn.
