Detailed History

This store was owned by Harry I. Gipstein, who ran it with his wife, Harriet. The Jewish couple, both of Russian heritage but born in Connecticut, lived a few blocks west of the store at 20 Rockville Street since at least 1940; by 1960 they had moved to West Hartford. In February of that year, the store was robbed by a masked bandit. The newspaper noted that Harry's brother, Nathan, a musician who had also clerked at the store, had been killed in a robbery there in 1941.
