Detailed History
From 1938 to 1949 this site was listed in the Green Book as a barbershop. It was located on the same street as Lemons, another barbershop that served African American patrons according to the Green Book, and J. Prioleau, a beauty parlor also listed in the Green Book. According to the 1915 Sanborn Map, the latest available for Tarrytown, the street contained a variety of building types, including but not limited to dwellings, tailor shops, an auto shop, a fire department union house, a synagogue, and flats. There were also several vacant buildings on the street. Valley Street is currently home to a senior living facility, Sleepy Hollow Senior Living, three vacant lots, and a Salvation Army.
