Detailed History

The Marland Beauty Parlor in Aberdeen was in operation by 1924, originally at 207 1/2 S. Main, over Orlander’s Clothing Store. In 1927, they advertised “Creative Styles in Hair Shingling. We use exclusive Eugene Permanent Waving.” A 1937 ad promoted two different permanent wave treatments and a hot oil treatment. According to the City Directory, the business relocated to the Olwin Store at 323 S. Main by 1930; an ad in the 1938 directory says that they had moved to the second floor.

The Marland Beauty Parlor was owned by Richard Marlink in 1940, Iva Marlink in 1945, and Carl M. VanderHoek in 1948, according to city directories. The building was constructed for the Olwin-Angell Store by Anthony H. Olwin and Robert Angell in 1903, though the third floor was not added until 1914. The business was eventually sold to Herbergers in 1969, and the Olwin and Ackley families sold the building in 1984. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 as part of the Aberdeen Commercial Historic District.
