Detailed History
The 1940 census lists Charles and Rose Stephens at this address. They are both Black, born in Virginia, and own their house. He is 60 and she is 58. Mr. Stephens is a funeral director who completed seventh grade. Mrs. Stephens also completed seventh grade. They have a nephew, Robert Cross, age 22, in the household and three boarders: Ashley Marnings, age 46; Robert Brown, age 23; Treman Fowlen, age 19. The family is not listed in Newport News in the 1950 census.
