Detailed History

According to the 1940 census, William B.C. Herndon and his wife Bertie lived at 751 26th Street. Both are Black and age 47. They own their house. Mr. Herndon was born in North Carolina and completed four years of high school. He works as a "tool and oiler dept ship." Mrs. Herndon was born in Virginia, as were both of her parents.  She completed three years of college and works as a hairdresser. They have two daughters and a son-in-law in their household: Josephene Herndon, age 20; Cecil Patterson, age 29; Marie Patterson, age 22. This family is not listed in Newport News in the 1950 census.
