Detailed History

There were other motels with the same name found in New York State and North Carolina, but the motel mentioned in the Green Book was in Suffolk County, NY. It was first included in the Green Book in 1963. Before the Green Book, local papers had run ads for the motel from 1960 onwards. Ads adressed selling unneeded furnishings, help wanted, employment opprintuties for other business that used the motel as a recruiting site, and special considerations for housing religious groups. Looking through local papers, the Pines Motor Lodge was a victim of an attempted robbery in 1961. When visiting the Pines Motor Lodge today, a young employ shared that her parents bought the business in the 1970s from an African American man whom she only knew him from his last name Mr. Black.
