Description

Originally located in a one-story building at 317-319 Glenwood, Pixie’s Bar at some point expanded to include the two-story structure at 1359-1361 Jefferson Ave. where the main entrance now is. The buildings have undergone extensive modifications. The location of the original bar now has a second story, and the Glenwood side is covered in stucco. Two windows on the first floor have been filled in. The Jefferson Ave. portion is now three stories with brick at the first-floor level and yellow siding above.

Detailed History

The site is located just off Jefferson Avenue, where a number of Green Book sites were located. The layout, surrounding structures, workmanship, and materiality of the site have all been heavily altered since the business was listed in the Green Book. The entrance to the bar was at some point moved from Glenwood to Jefferson Ave. The structure serves its mid-1900s purpose as a bar, and its association with the Green Book establishes it as significant to African American history.
