Description

220 Frazier Street is a one-story brick dwelling in a residential community at the corner of Frazier and Howard. Across Howard Avenue to the west is a large U-Haul facility.

Detailed History

Building permit #1839 authorizing construction of this house was issued on July 11, 1955. The Wade Construction Company erectted the 52' X 24' frame house covered with asbestos siding on block 19, lot 13. This residential area of Fredericksburg primarily housed an African American population. It appears that business this was a husband/wife partnership between Clarence and Adelaide Taylor. City Directories for 1962 and 1964 list Clarence Taylor as a grocery clerk in Quantico and Adelaide as a waitress at the General Washington Inn & Motel, which was a whites-only business. The restaurant at 220 Frazier Street may therefore have been a side business for the Taylors, or they stopped operating the restaurant in 1962.
