Description

According to a Buffalo Sanborn Map last updated in 1951, The Vendome Hotel was housed in a two-story building located at 175-177 Clinton Street, the south side of Clinton Street between Michigan Avenue and Pine Street. The northern street-facing side of the building housed the hotel lobby and extended an extra third story above the rest of the hotel. Hotel rooms were located on both the first and second floors of the hotel. The hotel’s kitchen was located on the first floor in the southwest corner of the building, and a large dining room and concert hall was located at the first-floor southeast corner, spanning the majority of the eastern half of the building. The building was demolished, and the site currently serves as a parking lot.

Detailed History

The Vendome Hotel was one of the oldest hotels in operation in Buffalo, operating from at least 1899. The hotel attracted popular musicians from all across the country, including the Count Basie Orchestra which performed in 1936. As of 1971, the hotel was still in operation, owned by Republican Committeeman Joseph Clone. Today, the former location of the hotel is a parking lot.
