Detailed History

The only African Americans living on West Main Street in the 1940 census is the Lewis family: Nancy, age 55, whose address is rear 1102; Clarissa, head of household, age 31, whose address is 1102. Also in Clarissa's household are her husband William, age 29, and daughter Mildred Shorter, age 15. If this family did operate the Virginia Inn out of their household, and there is no firm evidence of that, it has been demolished. The business is not listed in City Directories or noted on the 1955 Sanborn Insurance map, nor is the Lewis family listed on West Main Street on the 1950 census.
