Detailed History

Prior to 1953, there were two YMCA's in Summit, the Lincoln YMCA for the African-American community and the Summit YMCA (founded 1886) for the white community. The two merged in 1953 and occupied the building of the Summit YMCA at 67 Maple Street, Summit. The Green Book refers to the Lincoln YMCA, which stood about a block away from the Summit Y, and was sold in 1953 when the organizations merged. The site of the Lincoln YMCA has been rebuilt as offices facing the downtown business street.
