Description

The 1933 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map shows a two-story frame dwelling with composite roof at this location which may or may not be the same building here from 1950-1964. The property has three small one-story outbuildings, one of which is for autos. Immediately to the west of the dwelling stands the "James City Training School (Colored)."

Detailed History

The 1950 census lists William H. Baker, 71, his wife Clara B., 65, and lodger Malcom J. Ellison, 32, at 419 Nicholson. All are Black and born in Virginia. Mr. Baker does not have an occupation but Clara is an elementary teacher and Ellison is a doctor of medicine.
