Detailed History
A 1962 Green Book advertisement says: "Relax, refresh and enjoy; building lots for sale – good highways, for information write W.M. Hudson, West Point, VA." According to Camilla Lewis-Trammell, President of the New Kent African American Heritage Society, the R&D was named for Obadiah Rhodes and Matilda Dillard. In 2018, a local resident indicated that she remembered this business as similar to a juke joint, with some infamy. It was before her time (she was 80 in 2018), a place people 10 years older than she would frequent.
