Description
The 1930 Sanborn insurance map depicted 141 Sylvan as simple, two-story, rectangular frame building with a one-story front porch as well as a small porch to the rear. Part of a large redevelopment zone, the house was demolished. This section of Sylvan no longer exists, so it is difficult to ascertain the exact location of the house; 141 Sylvan Avenue is therefore indicated very generally on the map.

Detailed History
Carrie V. Jones listed her boarding house at 141 Sylvan Avenue on Asbury Park’s West Side as a tourist home in The Green Book from 1938 to 1940 and from 1946 through 1967: almost the entire run of the publication.
The 1950 census recorded that Mrs. Jones was born around 1885. She died, according to her obituary, in Asbury Park in 1958 at the age of 80. An African-American widow, she had moved to the area around 1915. Mrs. Jones was very active in local politics as well as community organizations. Among other positions, she served as a trustee of the West Side Community Center (see listing at 115 DeWitt Avenue) at its beginnings.
