Description

The renumbering of Fisher Avenue in Neptune makes it unclear which current lot or structure was the Busy Bee Cottage (see history for address issues), so at present nothing is certain about the building. The location of the home in this residential area of Neptune is approximate on the map.

Detailed History

Busy Bee Cottage was listed in The Green Book as a vacation resort from 1950 through 1966 at three different addresses on Fisher Avenue in Neptune: at 446 from 1950 through 1959; at 416 in 1960 and 1961; and at 418 from 1962 through 1966. As Fisher Avenue lots have been renumbered, it is most likely that these were all the same location, particularly since both 446 and 418 are linked to Archie and Annie Miller, longtime Neptune residents.

Mr. Miller, according to the 1940 census, was an African-American man born in South Carolina. A construction worker, he lived in Neptune for a half-century, and died in 1983 at the age of 85. Annie Saunders Miller retired from her job as an aide at the local hospital in 1983, and died at the age of 83 in 1998.
