Annie Elizabeth Dixon (maiden name: Brown) was born on May 13, 1819. On January 1, 1835, she married Henry Thomas Dixon in Washington County, Maryland. The couple eventually came to live in Fauquier County, Virginia. Together they had eleven children: Laura, born about 1836; Collins, born about 1838; Richardetta C., born about 1840; Susan W., born about 1842; Annie B., born about 1846; Henry T., born about 1847; Camden P., born about 1849; Alice P., born about 1853; Claudia M., born about 1854; Frank, born about 1857; and Thomas Pratt, born about 1859.
The family moved to Washington, D.C., following the 1860 election, as it had become too dangerous for her husband to live in Fauquier County due to his Unionist and Republican leanings. Her husband had allegedly been the only man in Fauquier County to vote for Abraham Lincoln in the election of 1860. Following her husband’s murder on November 10, 1865, Annie continued to live in Washington, D.C., for many years. She applied for a pension in 1890 and was able to receive one due to a special act of Congress despite her husband not serving on active duty at the time of his death. She received $25 a month commencing on July 11, 1890, which she collected until her death on February 3, 1899, in Washington D.C. In 1895, she had her husband's remains reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery, where she is buried alongside him.
