John Black
John Black was born around 1837. By the early 1860s, he was living in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He married a woman named Mary Ann, and they had a child in the early 1860s. He enlisted in the Union army on October 7, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 96th Pennsylvania Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Seven Days’ Battles, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was wounded in the Battle of Salem Church on May 3, 1863, and he died at Potomac Creek Hospital on May 29, 1863.
