Martha Pumphrey was born on April 25, 1845, in Indiana, to John and Susannah Pumphrey. Her father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate and $700 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Wildcat, Indiana. She married John Milton Summers on August 13, 1863, and they had at least three children: Larkin, born around 1865; John, born around 1867; and Allie, born around 1869. They lived in Wildcat, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $3,000 of real estate and $100 of personal property. She remained in Wildcat for the rest of her life, and she died there of a “dropsical trouble” on July 21, 1904.
