Marion Pumphrey
Marion Pumphrey was born on August 21, 1838, in Indiana to John and Susannah Pumphrey. His father was a farmer who owned $3,000 of real estate and $700 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Wildcat, Indiana. He enlisted in the Union army on August 29, 1861, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company G of the 8th Indiana Cavalry later that day. The regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He was eventually promoted to sergeant, and he mustered out on July 20, 1865.

He returned to Wildcat after the war. He married Nancy Lorts on August 23, 1866, and they had at least four children: Jacob, born around 1871; Florence, born around 1873; Minnie, born around 1876; and Warren, born around 1879. They lived in Wildcat, and Pumphrey worked as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $800 of real estate and $400 of personal property. His wife died in the late 1800s, and by 1900, he was living in his daughter Minnie’s household in Wildcat. He died of stomach cancer in Tipton County, Indiana, on August 18, 1902.
