Abby Jane Arms (maiden name: Baker) was born around 1803 in Connecticut. She married Hiram Phelps Arms on September 12, 1838, and they had three children: Sarah Jane, born on August 14, 1839; Charles Jesup, born on June 9, 1841; and Theodore, born around 1845. Her husband described her as “a model wife and mother,” recalling that “In all the vicissitudes of our married life never did an unpleasant word pass between us.”
They lived in Norwich, Connecticut, and her husband worked as a minister. By 1850, they owned $2,500 of real estate. Two decades later, they owned $5,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property, and they employed at least one white domestic servant. She died in Sherbrooke, Canada, on August 10, 1878.
