An enduring African American neighborhood is Starr Hill, where African American physicians, journalists, a legendary professional football player, entrepreneurs, ministers, and educational leaders have lived since the early 1900s. The Starr Hill neighborhood is located between UVA and downtown Charlottesville Mall, bounded on the north by Preston Avenue, to the east by Ridge/McIntire Road, to the south by the CSX Railroad, and to the west by the Norfolk Southern Railroad. It is also home to several churches and Jefferson High School, and part of the current Starr Hill neighborhood was previously part of Vinegar Hill.
