In 1865, many of the first African American freed men and women began teaching generations of African American students in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. In 1894, a new building opened on Fourth Street NW, and in 1926 Jefferson High School opened next to it. In 1951, city and county high schools for African Americans consolidated when Burley High School was built. Jefferson High School became Charlottesville's all African American elementary school until it closed in 1965. In 2002, African American alumni, friends, and residents united to save the Jefferson School, which has become the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center.
