The Albemarle Training School

The Albemarle Training School opened in 1915 as a teacher-training school with a high-school curriculum. It also functioned as a trade school that provided instruction in carpentry, cooking, and farming. For many years, it was the only school in a five-county area that African American children could attend beyond the seventh grade. In 1951, students at the Albemarle Training School were transferred to the new Burley High School in Charlottesville and the Jefferson School became an elementary school. It closed in 1959 shortly after county schools integrated.
