James Mead was born either in 1809 or on June 22, 1811, in Eaton, New Hampshire, to Joseph Mead and Sarah Chase. He married Comfort Rogers on June 28, 1836, and they had at least eleven children: James, who was born in 1837 and died in 1855; Joseph, born around 1838; Jonathan, born around 1841; Willis, born around 1842; Charles, born around 1846; Francis, born around 1847; Juliette, born around 1850; Sarah, born around 1852; Lewis, born around 1854; Susan, born around 1857; and James, born around 1859. The family lived in Bartlett, New Hampshire. Mead worked as a farmer, and by 1860, he owned $700 of real estate and $400 of personal property. A decade later, he owned $1,500 of personal property. By 1900, they were living in their son James’s household in Bartlett. He died there of “paralysis” on August 25, 1900.
