Charles Quimby was born around 1840 in Concord, Vermont, to Roswell Quimby and Sarah W. Hudson. His father was a farmer who owned $300 in real estate in 1850. Quimby attended school in Concord, and by 1860, he was working as a farmer laborer. He enlisted in the Union army on June 1, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 3rd Vermont Infantry on July 16. The regiment helped defend Washington, D.C., from July 1861 until March 1862. It took part in the Seven Days’ Battles from June 25-July 1, 1862 and the Battle of Antietam that September. He died of disease on October 27, 1862
