Abner S. Loden was born around 1834. He married Nancy C. Jones on December 18, 1856, and they had at least four children: William, born around 1860; Belle, born around 1863; Thomas, born around 1865; and Jennie, born around 1867. They lived in Cherokee County, Texas.
He enlisted in the Confederate army, and he mustered in as a private in Company B of the 28th Texas Cavalry on April 5, 1862. He fell ill a few months later, and he remained on sick furlough until at least August 1863. In February 1863, he declared that the “prospect for peace is fine,” insisting that the Emancipation Proclamation had shattered northern morale. By January 1864, he was working in the Quartermaster’s Department in Tyler, Texas. He died in the late 1860s.
