Solomon Naugle was born around 1833 in Indiana to Jacob and Elizabeth Naugle. His father was a farmer who owned $1,500 of real estate in 1850. He grew up and attended school in Jackson, Indiana, and he married Minerva Hubbard on October 29, 1856. They had at least five children: Altha, born around 1858; Erastus, born around 1860; Minnie, born around 1863; Elmer, born around 1868; and Rhena, born around 1870.
They lived in Howard, Indiana, and Naugle worked as a farmer. By 1860, they owned $150 of personal property. In April 1865, Naugle mourned the death of President Abraham Lincoln, writing, "I could kill the one that kild him if [I] had the chance." He "thouht this war was about ove[r] when richmond was taken but now I cant tell when it will end nor no one els." The family moved to Pierce, Indiana, in the 1860s, and by 1870, they owned $300 of personal property. By 1900, they were living in Washington, Indiana, and he died there on October 14, 1911.
