William H. Peck was born around 1841 in Chenango County, New York, to Philip and Roby Peck. His father was a farmer who owned $800 of real estate and $300 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in New Berlin, New York, and he probably moved to Indiana by the early 1860s.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 27, 1861, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company G of the 9th Indiana Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Perryville, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle of Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta campaign. He died near Resaca, Georgia, on May 16, 1864.
