Porter E. Brant was born March 3, 1843, in Hagar Township, Michigan, to Daniel and Marietta Brant. His father was a farmer who owned $800 of real estate by 1850. He grew up and attended school in Berrien County, Michigan, and by 1860, he was working as a farmer. He married Harriet Moore on October 30, 1866, and they had at least three children: Ella, born around 1868; Jesse, born around 1872; and Maud, born around 1888. He worked as a farmer in Bainbridge, Michigan, and by 1870, he owned $300 of real estate and $100 of personal property. His wife died on April 29, 1925, and he died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Bainbridge on November 29, 1926.
