Martha Harvey (maiden name: Carr) was born around 1811 in Vermont. She married Orange Harvey on January 15, 1839, and they had at least five children: Mary, born around 1841; Ira, born around 1842; William, born on March 4, 1844; Benjamin, born around 1848; and Martha, born around 1851. They lived in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and her husband worked as a laborer. By 1860, they owned $300 of real estate and $200 of personal property. A decade later, they owned $2,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property. During the winter of 1879-80, she was “thrown from a sleigh upon the hard ground, and sustained some injuries.” Soon afterward, she “had an attack of something that seemed like paralysis.” She remained “in quite feeble health” until at least May 1880. She died of pneumonia near St. Johnsbury on April 18, 1887.
